Trauma from deeply disturbing or painful life events can cause long lasting damage to the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing of an individual. When trauma happens in childhood, the imprint left on the child’s psyche can continue playing out into adulthood.
Effects of trauma can show up as a lack of confidence, low self-esteem, and low self worth. I would estimate that trauma is the underlying cause behind most mental health problems, especially anxiety and depression.
The most common forms of trauma that my clients tend to have experienced are violence and abuse (psychological and/or physical), death of someone close, bullying, and sexual abuse. Other causes of trauma are natural disasters such as earthquakes or tsunami’s, war, accidents, medical diagnosis or interventions, redundancy, and financial hardship.
What I’m most passionate about with hypnotherapy is helping my clients to unpack their trauma and move on from their past to become more confident in themselves. In the deeply relaxed state of hypnosis, one able to calmly observe their unhappy or disturbing past memories, and make sense of them from a new perspective. When a person lets go of the past, they’re able to move forward in life in a much more empowered way.
An example of this is a client who came to me feeling very anxious about his upcoming surgery. My client confessed that he was terrified of blood, and upon questioning I discovered that he’d had a couple of horrific accidents and incidents as a child in which he had lost a lot of blood. After viewing these events under hypnosis, he was able to put them into perspective and see that undergoing surgery with skilled professionals in a controlled environment was perfectly safe and not life threatening. At the end of the session he was feeling positive about having the surgery and looking forward to getting it done.
I have found with long term mental health issues such as depression and anxiety that a number of sessions are usually required to fully heal from past trauma. Each session can feel like a major breakthrough as you peel back the layers.
